Tea Bowl Notes vol.28 Tokugawa Art Museum: Song Dynasty Jūkō Celadon Tea Bowl, Named "Kayo" (Lotus Leaf)
Jūkō Celadon Tea Bowl, Named Kayo
Yuan to Ming Dynasty, 14th Century, China
This specific type of celadon is traditionally known as "Jūkō Celadon" (Jūkōseiji), following the lineage and lore that it was highly favored by Murata Jūkō, the seminal Muromachi-period tea master and founding figure of Wabi-cha (rustic tea ceremony). The bowl features both incised floral designs (kakkamon) and combed patterns (kushimemon) across its interior and exterior surfaces—a stylistic treatment colloquially referred to as Nekogakide ("cat-scratched style"). It is visually characterized by a distinctive yellowish-amber or beige glaze profile. This ware was passionately collected and appreciated during the Momoyama period, appearing frequently in the recorded tea diaries (chakaiki) of that era.
In his article "On Jūkō-seiji Celadon Tea Bowls," Hsieh Ming-liang notes that the Owari Tokugawa clan—founded by Tokugawa Yoshinao (1600–1650), the ninth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542–1616)—likewise held in its collection a celadon bowl visually similar to the previously cited Osozura (Fig. 2). Classified as a Kawachi Ochawan (Kawachi Tea Bowl), this piece was recorded in the Kami On-sukiya On-dōgu Chō (Inventories of Master Tea Utensils) dating to the 4th year of Shōtoku (1714) and the 13th year of Kyōhō (1728), among others. The lid of its paulownia storage box bears an ink inscription reading "Jūkō-ao" (Jūkō Celadon), with the poetic name (mei) "Okina" (The Old Man). Since the name Okina is presumed to be linked to the transfer of the 12th-generation Owari lord Naritaka's (in office 1839–1845) personal utensils to the Edo residence in the 12th year of Tenpō (1841), this case—if the hypothesis holds true—presents yet another example following Matsudaira Fumai’s Osozura wherein late-Edo period collectors categorized Chinese comb-scraped (biwen) celadon bowls as Jūkō tea bowls. Furthermore, because the inscription on the lid explicitly states "Jūkō-ao," the use of the term Jūkō-seiji (Jūkō Celadon) can be dated slightly earlier than its appearance in Tauchi Baiken's Tōki-kō (Treatise on Ceramics) of the 7th year of Kaei (1854).
