Jūkō Celadon Tea Bowl, named “Osozakura” (Late Cherry Blossoms)
Formerly owned by Matsudaira Fumai; collection of the Nezu Museum. Diameter of mouth: 15.5 cm.
Box inscription (hakogaki): “Jūkō / Chawan / Osozakura,” written by Matsudaira Fumai.
Provenance: Matsudaira Fumai → Nezu Museum.
Among surviving pieces transmitted from the Edo period onward with reliable, authenticated box inscriptions, none exist apart from the Nezu Museum’s “Osozakura.” In the Unshū Meibutsushō (Cloud Province Catalogue of Famous Objects), it is recorded as “Jūkō · Osozakura”; the box inscription is likewise in Fumai’s hand: “Jūkō · Chawan · Osozakura.”
The interior and exterior of the mouth rim of “Osozakura” display bands of induced colour (yūshoku), which are thought to have been caused by burial in the soil. The bowl is considered to have been excavated from the ground prior to the late Edo period and thereafter transmitted and used as a tea bowl.
The Mitsui Memorial Museum holds two examples of Jūkō celadon. In addition to the bowl named “Haran” (Turbulent Waves), there is another piece whose mouth rim also displays a band of induced colour (yūshoku), appearing pale yellow. This second bowl comes from the former collection of the Kita Mitsui family and is likewise considered possibly to have been an early excavated piece.
