Among Southern Song Guan ware foliate-rim bowls, the present example represents an exceptionally large form. A closely comparable piece is preserved in the Tokyo National Museum, also measuring 26 cm in diameter and now designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. This example was donated by Dr. Yokogawa Tamisuke.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the concept of "Southern Song Guan ware" had yet to be recognized in Japan. In fact, prior to the fall of the Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) and the Yiheyuan (Summer Palace) in Beijing, Guan ware of the Southern Song was virtually unknown to the world, having remained restricted to the Chinese imperial court. It was only after the transmission and formal identification of Southern Song Guan ware as a distinct category that Japanese scholars and collectors began to classify certain pieces accordingly. Notable examples include the large foliate-rim bowl in the Tokyo National Museum and the tripod censer in the Seikadō Bunko Art Museum, both now widely accepted as masterpieces of Southern Song Guan ware.

Height: 9.9 cm

Foot diameter: 7.1 cm

This vessel features a six-lobed foliate rim with an outturned mouth and deep curving walls. Six shallow vertical grooves are faintly visible on the exterior surface. The interior base is slightly recessed and formed with a shallow circular groove. The base is rounded, supported by a short, low footring.
It was fired on a spurred support, and both the interior and exterior are covered in a lustrous celadon glaze of pale bluish-green tone (fenqing 粉青). Multiple layers of glaze are evident beneath the rim and around the foot, revealing traces of repeated application. The surface displays broad brown crackle lines (da wenpian 大紋片), interspersed with some finer ice crackles (binglie 冰裂). The footring is unevenly glazed, with the exposed clay body at the foot’s resting point revealing a dark grayish tone from firing. The slightly convex base bears a single brown spot of glaze contraction at the center.

This oversized bowl belongs to a rare category of Southern Song Guan ware, notable for its monumental scale and precise potting. Its form and glaze characteristics closely resemble a celebrated example held in the Tokyo National Museum, making it a valuable reference for typological comparison and stylistic analysis within the corpus of extant Guan ware.
