Southern Song Guan Celadon Foliate Bowl (Shallow Bowl Type)
Palace Museum, Taipei
Ceramics Southern Song dynasty
Height: 5.5 cm Mouth diameter: 18.0 cm
This foliate-rimmed bowl is crafted in the form of a six-lobed hibiscus flower. It features an everted mouth with gently curving walls that follow the contour of the lobes. Along the inner wall, six evenly spaced shallow grooves extend outward from the center, subtly emphasizing the floral geometry. The bowl has a rounded base with a low circular footring.

The entire surface is covered in a celadon glaze characteristic of Guan ware. The glaze is of a bluish-green tone, with localized greyish tints. Its surface is densely patterned with both transparent ice crackles and dark brown crackle lines. At the rim, where the glaze is thinner, the dark-colored body clay shows through, forming a distinct greyish band. The base reveals an unglazed footring exposing the dark-toned ceramic body, a typical feature of Guan ware.
Compared to the other five foliate-rimmed Guan bowls in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, this example is shallower in form and features more substantial trimming and thicker glaze application. Its shape bears a resemblance to a Guan-type bowl housed in the Huzhou Museum, dated to the Southern Song–Yuan transition, though the latter exhibits a more moon-white glaze and pronounced surface corrosion.
This bowl provides valuable material for studying the aesthetic transition from the so-called “Alexander-type” bowls to early Southern Song Guan ware, as well as the technical challenges arising from combining northern and southern ceramic traditions in both body and glaze composition.
