里埃斯科(R.F.A.
The Chinese ceramics collection assembled by R.F.A. Riesco was not merely the expression of a single private taste, but rather a crystallisation of the aesthetic values shared by several leading early members of the Oriental Ceramic Society in the first half of the twentieth century. With well-documented provenance, extensive exhibition histories and solid scholarly references, the collection represented a rare and academically substantial body of Chinese ceramics within the British local public museum system. Following Riesco’s death, the collection passed into the ownership of the London Borough of Croydon, entering the public domain as a cultural trust. The decision taken in 2013 to sell part of this collection for financial reasons, however, provoked widespread controversy and transformed what had been a model public collection into one of the most contested episodes in the recent history of museum governance in the UK.
