Bowl with Hibiscus-Shaped Rim in Celadon Glaze, Guan WareSouthern Song dynasty (1127–1279)

Stoneware with celadon glazeHeight: 9.9 cm; Rim diameter: 26.0 cm; Foot diameter: 7.1 cmCollection number: 故瓷014115N000000000National Palace Museum, Taipei

This bowl, made of Guan ware, features a six-lobed foliate rim (resembling the hibiscus flower), an everted mouth, and deep curved walls. The exterior surface is subtly articulated with six shallow vertical flutes, while the interior center contains a shallow circular recess. The bowl terminates in a rounded base and a low ring foot. It was fired on spurs, and both the interior and exterior surfaces are covered with a soft bluish celadon glaze (粉青 fenqing). Along the area beneath the rim and at the foot, traces of multiple glaze applications are visible.

The glaze surface is characterized by prominent brown crackles (da wenpian) interspersed with finer "ice crackles" (binglie), a hallmark of Guan ware’s aesthetic. The glaze around the ring foot is unevenly applied, and the slightly convex base displays a single spot of glaze contraction, revealing a dark brown glaze flaw at the center. The unglazed foot rim exposes the grayish-buff stoneware body, typical of reduction-fired Guan ceramics.

This vessel exemplifies the refined technical and aesthetic characteristics of official Southern Song Guan ware: elegant proportions, sophisticated form, and a glaze suffused with nuanced tonal variation and deliberate crackling, reflecting both the courtly taste and ritualistic function of such ceramics during the period.
