Karamono Bunrin Chaire, Inscribed “Uji”
This tea caddy of the Bunrin type, produced in China during the Southern Song to Yuan dynasty (13th century), is a notable example of karamono wares treasured in Japan. Over the course of its transmission, it came into the possession of eminent tea masters such as Furuta Oribe, Kobori Enshū, and Katagiri Sekishū, each of whom adorned it with distinguished accoutrements, including an ivory lid and ornamental pouch, attesting to the esteem in which it was held.
In 1934, when Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (known as Jian, Jian’an) turned sixty and deepened his devotion to the Way of Tea, he acquired this piece as a commemorative utensil. The chaire embodies not only the ceramic artistry of Song–Yuan China but also the Japanese tea masters’ reinterpretation of imported Chinese wares within the aesthetic context of the Momoyama to early Edo periods.
Period: Southern Song to Yuan dynasty, 13th century
Place of Production: China
Provenance/Donor: Gift of Matsunaga Yasuzaemon
Museum Accession Number: TG-2196
