Dark ceramic jar with ribbed sides on a light gray background. The glossy surface reflects light, showcasing a slightly bulbous shape.

This tea caddy was formerly preserved by the Arima family of Kurume domain. Its provenance is well documented through several historical sources: a letter by Hino Yūshin (Terumoto, 1555–1623); a memorandum by Oda Urakusai recording that the tea caddy was presented to Tokugawa Hidetada by Kōdai-in's disciple Ishin Soden (1569–1633); a letter from Funakoshi Iyo-no-kami (Nagakage, 1597–1670) addressed to Konchi-in (Kōdai-ji's affiliate temple); and an inventory compiled by Nakamura Hanbei. These documents offer strong provenance for the tea caddy’s early history and high esteem.

Accompanying the piece is a square lacquer tray known as a Wakasa-bon, with vermilion lacquer applied to the interior and deep blue lacquer on the exterior—serving as an associated tray for the tea caddy.

Karamono Katatsuki Chaire 'Herame'

Heirloom by Tokugawa Ieyasu

Date: Southern Song to Yuan Dynasty, China (13th–14th century)

Material / Technique: Stoneware

Dimensions: Height 9.8 cm; Mouth diameter 4.9 cm; Body diameter 8.9 cm; Foot diameter 5.0 cm

This chaire (tea caddy) is a celebrated example of a Daimyō-mono, or "Great Tea Object"—a classification reserved for the most esteemed tea utensils treasured by tea masters before Sen no Rikyū. From the 16th century onward, karamono (Chinese-origin) tea caddies became imbued with authority and aesthetic value, forming the core of the early wabi-suki tea tradition.

This particular chaire is known as the “Katatsuki with Spatula Marks” due to the six diagonal carving lines incised from the shoulder to the lower body using a spatula-like tool (hera-me). It is also referred to as the “Kii-dōtaka” (Kii Province Tall-bodied Type), a name deriving from its transmission within the Kii Tokugawa family.

The body is made of a fine, dark gray clay characteristic of karamono ware and is covered with a lustrous amber glaze tinged with purplish-brown hues. Despite its robustly flared rim, the mouth is thinly constructed with refined craftsmanship. The base is flat, bearing clear traces of slab construction (ita-okoshi), further marking it as an unusual and easily identifiable example among karamono chaire.

It is accompanied by two shifuku (textile pouches): one in a checkered “ichimatsu fūtsū” pattern and another in plum-rosette arabesque donsu (brocade).

The provenance is distinguished: originally in the possession of Beniyasu Sōyō of Sakai, it was passed to Shioya Sōetsu, then to Imai Sōkun and subsequently to his son Sōton. Sōton later presented it as a gift to Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was one of the prized “Sunpu Owakemono” (objects bequeathed by Ieyasu), subsequently bestowed upon Tokugawa Yorinobu, first lord of the Kii Domain, and thereafter preserved as a hereditary treasure within the Kii Tokugawa family.
