This eggplant-shaped chaire (nasu chaire) takes its name from the slightly bulging, rounded body and the narrow, tapering mouth that together evoke an aubergine. The vessel is uniformly covered in a matte black glaze, yet subtle brownish tones appear in locales around the body, creating a delicate variation of surface hue. The provenance of the name “Tanabata” remains unclear; it is traditionally attributed to a bestowal by Kobori Gonshirō Masaoki (1625–1694; art name Hōsetsu).

Kobori Gonjurō Masaoki (1625–1694), known by the art name Hōsetsu (篷雪), was born in Kan’ei 2 (1625) as the second son of Lord Enshū (Kobori Masakazu, also known as Kobori Enshū). In later years, he ceased using the Kobori surname and adopted the name Asai (淺井), a family line historically tied to the Kobori clan, identifying himself as Asai Gonjurō Hōsetsu.

His elder brother, Daizen Sōkei (宗慶), was five years his senior. Upon the death of Lord Enshū in Shōhō 4 (1647), Hōsetsu received a fief of 1,000 koku in Asai District, Ōmi Province, as part of his inheritance.
Hōsetsu frequently appears in contemporary tea gathering records and was particularly esteemed for his discerning eye in the appraisal of tea utensils. Many notable objects identified by him have survived with his kanshōbako (inscribed storage box), which continue to be highly valued by later generations for their provenance and connoisseurship.
Hōsetsu passed away in Edo on the 4th day of the 8th month, Genroku 7 (1694), at the age of seventy.
