Among Yaozhou kiln gallbladder-shaped vases, the finest in both form and quality—and the most distinguished in the lineage of transmission—is the celebrated masterpiece recorded in Koyama Fujio’s Song Ceramics. All others rank distinctly below it. The discourse surrounding Yaozhou ware remains disordered; in recent years, unrigorous publications have further clouded judgment, while illegally excavated pieces and forgeries flood the market. As a result, any meaningful price consensus in the international market is unlikely to emerge in the short term.

Upright shapes of any kind, such as vases and bottles, are exceptionally rare among the large-scale production of the main Yaozhou kilns, which predominantly manufactured bowls and dishes. Vases of this attractive form, carved with floral designs and coated in the characteristic olive-green glaze, include two smaller examples excavated from the Yaozhou kiln sites at Huangpu near Tongchuan in Shaanxi province, illustrated in Songdai Yaozhou yaozhi / The Yaozhou Kiln Site of the Song Period, Beijing, 1998, p. 292, fig. 148: 1 and 2, col. pl. 8, fig. 2 and pl. 77, fig. 4, with the larger one probably illustrated again in Yaozhou yao / Yaozhou Kiln, Xi'an, 1992, (unnumbered plate). Another example excavated at Huachi county, Gansu province, and now in the Gansu Qingyang Region Museum, is published as an 'excellent example of Yaozhou ware' in Zhongguo taoci quanji [Complete series on Chinese ceramics], Shanghai, 1999-2000, vol. 7, pl. 126. A third closely related example was included in several exhibitions, including Yoshuyo / The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, 1997, cat. no. 75, and later sold in our London rooms, 11th May 2011, lot 2.
For an undecorated Yaozhou pear-shaped vase, see an example formerly in the Muwen Tang Collection, sold twice in our London rooms, first on 12th November 2003, lot 40, and again on 16th May 2018, lot 70.
