Two glossy green ceramic vases on a white background. The vases are large, round, and similar in design, with no visible text.

The concept of monochrome green glaze is particularly fascinating. Scholars generally believe that mature monochrome green glazes first appeared during the Northern Qi period, and that the development of the “floating colour” technique in Tang sancai (three-colour) wares likely originated from these green glazes. A notable reference is the Northern Qi to Sui green-glazed kundika in the Idemitsu Museum collection. Similarly, Sotheby’s London online sale once featured a comparable monochrome green-glazed piece from the Siyuan Tang collection. These early examples can be regarded as important precursors to the green-glazed wares of the Liao dynasty.

Two round, green ceramic objects with tan and black patterns, set against a white background. The texture appears worn and rustic.

Mr Tse Siu Bong (1924-2017) was a founding member of The Kau Chi Society, Hong Kong. His private study, known to a select few as the Zhongyong Caotang, reflected his modest nature. Renowned for his generosity and broad interests, Mr Tse built an extensive porcelain collection spanning 5,000 years, featuring pieces from numerous kilns across northern and southern China. He valued the historical and cultural significance of these artefacts far above their commercial worth, driven by a desire to showcase the rich lineage of Chinese ceramics.
