A white ceramic vase with a wide body and narrow neck on a plain gray background. The surface shows subtle texture and slight imperfections.

This magnificent jar is a visceral embodiment of the robust aesthetic ideals of the early Tang Dynasty—a true precursor to the celebrated "Moon Jars" of later periods. Its recent realization of only HKD 400,000 in the international market is a stark illustration of the current pricing volatility and the lack of consistent support for early Chinese white porcelain.

In an era where market hype can propel a single Sui Dynasty white-glazed cup to over HKD 1 million, other significant categories remain inexplicably undervalued and overlooked. With its flawless proportions and exquisite silhouette, this jar’s aesthetic and historical importance far surpasses many of the larger jars found in Japanese and Korean traditions. As the market eventually self-corrects, its valuation is destined to return to its rightful peak.

This white porcelain jar exudes an aura of profound robustness. Its minimalist form, devoid of ornamentation, combined with its imposing scale, encapsulates the powerful aesthetic ideals of the Sui and early Tang dynasties. The allure of this piece lies in its masterful silhouette: from the rounded "rolled lip" (yuyuan), the form expands dramatically at the upper torso before tapering gracefully toward a narrowed base. This high-centered, taut profile is characteristic of the ovoid bodies found in dragon-handled amphorae prevalent during the Sui dynasty, serving as a key diagnostic feature for its dating.

In the history of Chinese ceramics, while the origins of "white-glazed wares" can be traced back to the Northern Qi (or Northern Wei according to excavation report of Baihe Kiln), true white porcelain was only established during the Sui dynasty. A defining characteristic of Sui white glaze is observed at the pooling points: the trace amounts of iron in the glaze produce a faint yellowish-green tint, a hallmark of the period. By the early Tang dynasty, these glaze accumulations tended to shift toward a bluish tone.

Resembling a full moon, this magnificent jar stands as a physical manifestation of the intense energy of the Sui and early Tang—an era that laid the foundations for the three centuries of prosperity of the Great Tang Empire.
