This Sui Dynasty white porcelain cup, sourced from the prestigious Mayuyama & Co., perfectly encapsulates the pivotal aesthetic transition from the Northern Dynasties to the flourishing Tang. Featuring a thinner body and a noticeably whiter glaze, it is a hallmark of Sui craftsmanship. While such cups are relatively abundant in quantity, they have recently become a focal point of intense market speculation; their valuation has since corrected from the million-dollar range back to a more grounded HKD 250,000.

In contrast, earlier examples from the Baihe Kiln of the Northern Wei period typically feature thicker walls and forms characteristic of Northern Wei aesthetics. For a deeper understanding of how these vessels reshaped the trajectory of Chinese ceramics, one may refer to Wang Qiusheng’s influential Caixin article: "How a Single White Porcelain Cup Changed the History of Chinese Ceramics."

Object: White Porcelain Cup

Period: Sui Dynasty (6th–7th Century)

Dimensions: H. 8.5 cm / Mouth Dia. 12.4 cm

Price: ¥5,000,000 (Approx. HKD 250,000)

This white porcelain cup from the Sui Dynasty epitomizes an era of refined minimalism, characterized by a lustrous glaze and a flawlessly executed form. While the silhouette appears simple, the subtle flaring of the rim reveals a meticulous attention to detail and a high level of artistic consciousness. The base features a distinctive flared foot (known in Japanese as bachi-kodai), with a flat recessed bottom typical of ceramic typologies from the Sui through the early Tang Dynasty. The sharp, chamfered edges of the foot accentuate the vessel’s sense of structural rigor and elegance.

The mastery of transparent glazing is evident in its exceptional clarity. Due to trace amounts of iron in the glaze composition, areas where the glaze pools exhibit a delicate yellowish-green tint. This is particularly striking near the foot—where the glaze forms "bead-like" droplets—and in the interior (the mikomi), where the glaze creates a ripple-like effect. Though these features result from the unpredictability of the kiln, they serve as the aesthetic soul of the piece.

The cup is housed in an antique paulownia wood box inscribed with the name "Yusui" (Spring Water) by a former collector. This poetic moniker likely draws a parallel between the crystalline glaze at the bottom of the cup and the serene purity of a flowing spring.
