An important work, as Tang sancai vessels with blue glaze or splashed blue glaze are exceedingly rare in surviving examples. The gap between their market valuation and their artistic significance is gradually narrowing. Recently, in the Ise Collection sale at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, a Tang sancai splashed-blue wannian jar attracted attention when it was sold for HKD 1.95 million.

拍賣筆記 vol.237 佳士得紐約:藍理捷,唐三彩藍釉灑藍斑白釉淨瓶,60960美元成交 - Christie’s NY, J.J.Lally, A Blue-Splashed Straw-Glazed Pottery Kundika, Tang Dynasty, Sold for 60960USD / Blue and white ceramic vessel with a round body and tall neck on a gray background. The vessel features abstract blue patterns.

拍賣筆記 vol.237 佳士得紐約:藍理捷,唐三彩藍釉灑藍斑白釉淨瓶,60960美元成交 - Christie’s NY, J.J.Lally, A Blue-Splashed Straw-Glazed Pottery Kundika, Tang Dynasty, Sold for 60960USD / Blue and white ceramic pitcher with elongated neck and spout, featuring abstract patterns. Set against a dark gray background.

This Tang dynasty pottery kundika, coated with a straw glaze and splashed with cobalt blue, represents an exceptionally rare surviving type. The kundika, a ritual vessel used in Buddhist practice, originated in India and was transmitted to China via the Silk Road, where it flourished during the Tang dynasty. The form is tall and elegant, with well-proportioned shoulders and body, a slender neck rising to a flared mouth, conveying both dignity and refinement. It exemplifies the solemn aura and technical sophistication of Tang Buddhist ritual wares.

The application of blue splashes, derived from cobalt pigments likely imported through western trade, not only enhanced its visual appeal but also reflected the Tang dynasty’s fascination with exotic colors and materials. As such, this vessel served not merely as a ritual implement but also as a manifestation of Tang cosmopolitan aesthetics.

Formerly in the collection of Jan van Beers Oriental Art, London, the piece was sold in New York in 2025 for over USD 60,000—far exceeding its estimate—underscoring the rarity and renewed scholarly as well as market recognition of Tang blue-splashed Buddhist ritual wares.
