Among Tang sancai wares, blue glaze is considered the rarest, with pure blue examples being especially uncommon. This ovoid ewer is distinguished by its well-balanced form and refined proportions, with the glaze exhibiting a profound and restrained visual depth. The production of blue glaze in the Tang dynasty was technically demanding, and such pieces were often associated with the court or the highest echelons of the aristocracy, making their survival to the present day all the more remarkable. The provenance shows its passage from European collections to the United States, before entering the hands of J. J. Lally, reflecting the sustained Western interest in Tang blue-glazed ceramics. Despite signs of damage, the ewer realized USD 40,000—well above its estimate—underscoring the renewed recognition in the international market of the rarity and importance of Tang sancai blue-glazed wares.
