Blue and white ceramic jar with a lid, featuring a dripped glaze pattern. Set against a plain white background, giving a serene feel.

Within Tang sancai, blue glaze stands at the pinnacle of rarity and esteem, with examples in pure blue glaze regarded as the most precious of all. Such pieces can be seen among the sancai wares commissioned by Empress Wu Zetian, unearthed from the tombs of her son Li Hong and his consort, Empress Ai. The variant known as sala lan (sprinkled blue) is likewise exceptionally rare, and the present piece was recorded early on in Longquan Jifang. As the artistic value of Tang sancai has come to be more widely recognized, and when considered alongside the ceremonial protocols of the High Tang court, works of this type stand out both for their artistry and their historical significance, embodying the very essence of Tang dynasty art.
