Tang Sancai Brown-Glazed Pig
Earthenware / Tang Dynasty, 8th century
Height: 13.5 cm, Length: 20.8 cm
Collection: Tokyo National Museum
Description
This funerary figure in the form of a pig was produced in northern China during the 7th to 8th centuries. Such mingqi (funerary objects) were typically made of low-fired earthenware covered in lead glazes. While the vibrant sancai (three-color) wares of yellow, green, and brown are well known from this period, representations of familiar animals were often rendered in monochrome glazes, likely to enhance realism. This brown-glazed pig exemplifies such tendencies, with a simplified yet lifelike form that reflects careful observation of the animal’s physical characteristics.
