This small Longquan Yellow Glazed (Beishoku) celadon censer is miniature in size—small enough to be held in the palm. In earlier years, such small objects were often thought to be Qin Lu (censer for musical instrument), but in fact, they should be classified as “nongqi.” The concept of nongqi has existed since the Shang and Zhou dynasties; it typically refers to small objects, mostly vessels, that were used as appreciated playthings by gentlemen and women.

During the Southern Song period, a similar Longquan kiln celadon tripod censer—with a chrysanthemum-shaped drum nail—was excavated from the Jiang family tomb in Xia Cang, Lishui, Zhejiang (1222 AD). It measures 4.7 cm in height, has a mouth diameter of 7.2 cm, and a base diameter of 3.3 cm, and is now housed in the Lishui Museum. Although Southern Song official kilns also produced beige celadon works, judging from the excavation records and the type of glaze, this beige celadon incense burner should still be attributed to the Longquan kiln.
