Ewer with Applied Medallions, Three-colour Glazes

Tang Dynasty (7th–8th century)

Height: 32.9 cm; Body diameter: 17.9 cm; Foot diameter: 9.4 cm

Collection of Fuji Art Museum, Tokyo

This sancai-glazed ewer features a prominent globular body contrasted with a slender neck and a tall foot, creating a somewhat unsteady silhouette.

The mouth is pinched from both sides into a lobed form, and a single handle extends from the shoulder to the neck. The vessel is adorned with three tiers of applied palmette-shaped medallions arranged in a staggered (chidorigake) pattern on the body, each highlighted with blue glaze.

The background is entirely covered in green glaze, though its application is slightly mottled, illustrating the fluid and organic glaze effects characteristic of Tang sancai ceramics.
