The Northern Qi lotus jar is a rare and significant artifact emerging from an era when Buddhism flourished in northern China. Its globular shape, short neck, and intricately carved descending lotus petal decoration reflect not only highly developed techniques, but also a profound religious symbolism.
In Buddhist iconography, the lotus is celebrated for its purity and its ability to rise unsullied from murky waters, symbolizing spiritual awakening and liberation from the cycle of samsara. Under the auspices of a Buddhist state, such vessels were incorporated into burial practices to serve as ritual objects that could safeguard and purify the soul.

Northern Qi Lotus Jar with Four Knobs
Covered globular jar with short neck, carved decoration of descending lotus petals with flared tips projecting outward at midpoint of body, short, flat circular foot, and four pierced square lug handles encircling the shoulder; the slightly domed cover with knob in the form of a lotus bud; buff earthenware with pale yellowish-green lead-fluxed glaze over carved and incised decoration; base mostly unglazed, with some glaze overflow. Place of manufacture uncertain, probably northern China. One of a set of four burial vessels (2006.170.255-258).
