Green, circular, bronze stand with three short legs, displayed on a beige surface against a gray background. Ancient and weathered appearance.

Ink palette or circular stand

Northern and Southern Dynasties period (420-589) to Sui dynasty (581-618)

Object Number

2006.170.224

Description

Wide, circular, dish-shaped ink palette or stand supported on three hoofed cabriole legs.

These bronze miniature objects from the Northern and Southern Dynasties period are frequently found in contexts associated with Buddhism—such as subterranean palace complexes or pagoda bases—and typically occur in sets. They are analogous in function to the auxiliary vessels found in Shang and Zhou bronzes. The three‐legged bronze inkstone stands can be traced back as early as the Han Dynasty; for example, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford holds a set of covered three‐legged bronze inkstone stands once owned by Sir Herbert Ingram, an important member of the Oriental Ceramic Society.

The Nelson Museum also possesses a set of Buddhist ritual ceramic objects that were sold by Lan Lijie and handled by Song Xinge, which serve as another significant point of reference for this category of work.
