Golden frog sculpture with black spots, wide-mouthed expression, on a patterned, dark base. Set against a plain gray background.

The gilded bronze inlaid bear foot is relatively rare, typically found as a gilded product. Turquoise, rubies, agate, and white jade are the main materials used for inlays, with slight variations depending on the grade of the item. Goro Sakamoto once had a similar piece, which was sold at Sotheby’s for HKD 504,000. Additionally, there are bear-shaped paperweights, typically produced as a set of four pieces. These items are crafted with greater attention to detail and are even more rare due to their higher quality and lower survival rate.

Gilt ornament in the form of a bear

Object: Gilt Bronze Bear-shaped Attachment

Material: Bronze

Dynasty: Han Dynasty

Dimensions: Width 7.0 cm, Thickness 6.0 cm, Height 3.8 cm

This gilt bronze attachment is cast in the form of a bear. The bear's body features numerous depressions originally inlaid with turquoise.

Its back has a recessed flat area, likely designed to support another object, suggesting it functioned as a bear-shaped foot for a larger vessel. This piece bears a striking resemblance to the bear-shaped feet of the "Chariot Measure (Jianwu 21st Year Imperial Hu)" dated to AD 45 in the collection of the Palace Museum Beijing. It is therefore inferred to be a bear-shaped foot for a container.

The bear is entirely gilded and depicted in a kneeling posture. Its back is slightly arched, lifting its head with mouth agape in a supporting stance, giving the kneeling pose an anthropomorphic quality. The pair of bear ears are round and hollow; they likely originally held inlaid turquoise or other gemstones. Fine incised lines encircle the ears and face, depicting fur. The bear's open mouth reveals teeth, as if roaring to intimidate. The bear kneels with its left hind leg bent and its left forelimb also resting on the ground. Its right forelimb rests on its right knee. The tips of all four limbs are incised to depict claws. The abdomen is rounded and substantial, conveying a sense of solidity and stability. Although merely an attachment, this piece is exquisitely decorated, suggesting the complete vessel it belonged to was undoubtedly of exceptional craftsmanship.
