唐物円座肩衝茶入 銘「利休円座」

此件茶入為漢地所製唐物茶入,通體施以光澤瑩潤的黑飴釉,堪稱唐物円座類茶入之本歌。其原為京都本能寺的什物,後為豐臣秀吉所藏,繼而下賜千利休。其後一度成為德川幕府的什器,最終由姬路酒井侯家拜領。(參見《大正名器鑑》)
器形為肩衝式,高台之形制酷似坐具「円座」,故得銘「円座」。此器因為曾為千利休(1522–1591)所持,後世稱為「利休円座」。此器自天正十四年(1586)利休所主辦之茶會以來,即屢次見於同時代之茶會記錄。其釉藥施掛方式為單層施釉,而非重疊掛釉,為其一大特徵。

This tea caddy, produced in China, is a karamono (Chinese import) chaire, covered overall with a lustrous black ame glaze, and is regarded as the prototypical example (honka) of the Enza type. Originally part of the furnishings of Honnō-ji in Kyoto, it subsequently entered the possession of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who later presented it to Sen no Rikyū. Thereafter, it was for a time held among the treasured wares of the Tokugawa shogunate, before being bestowed upon the Sakai lords of Himeji (as recorded in Taishō Meikikan).
The vessel is of the katatsuki (shouldered) form, with a foot ring resembling the woven mat seat known as enza, hence its name. Because it was owned by Sen no Rikyū (1522–1591), it came to be known as “Rikyū Enza.” This tea caddy frequently appears in contemporary tea gathering records, beginning with a gathering hosted by Rikyū in the fourteenth year of Tenshō (1586). Notably, its glaze is applied in a single coat rather than in multiple layers, distinguishing it from other examples.
