SACA Observation

Peachbloom is a Kangxi imperial copper-red, blown beneath a clear glaze. The surface runs from dusty pink to crushed strawberry, often with moss-green specks. The glaze was reserved for the scholar’s-desk group known as the ba da ma. The willow-leaf vase, liuye zun, also called Guanyin ping, is one of the four bottle forms: high shoulders, a flared neck, and a body tapering to a narrow foot. The profile recalls a willow leaf and the vase held by Guanyin. No large examples are known.

The present vase is 15.4 cm high, with a six-character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue. It belonged to Henry C. Schwab (1867–1941) of Chicago and entered the Art Institute of Chicago in 1941. It is now released from the museum.

Comparable examples with stable records: two in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 14.2 and 14.6 cm; the Robert Lehman amphora in the Metropolitan Museum, 15.6 cm. Returned to the market: Stephen Junkunc, III, 14.6 cm, Christie’s New York, 18–19 March 2021, lot 856; J. Insley Blair, 15.6 cm; the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, 16.6 cm, formerly Ralph M. Chait, Christie’s New York, 14–15 September 2017, lot 1230; Christie’s Hong Kong, 31 May 2017, lot 3014, 16 cm, HK$4,260,000, previously Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2005, lot 1233; and the willow-leaf vase in T. T. Tsui’s Jingguantang set of eight, 15.5 cm, chip to the interior of the foot, Christie’s Hong Kong, 3 November 1996, lot 557, the set HK$7,170,000.

PROVENANCE

Henry C. Schwab (1867-1941) Collection, Chicago.

The Art Institute of Chicago, accessioned in 1941.

The elegant shape of this vase may be referred to as both liuye zun ('willow-leaf vase’) as well as Guanyin ping, a reference to the similarly shaped vessel held by many figures of Guanyin that is said to contain ambrosia or a magic elixir. The amphora form is one of the ba da ma or 'Eight Great Numbers', eight specific vessels covered in a peachbloom glaze for the scholar’s table.

Similar Kangxi-marked amphoras are in major institutions worldwide including the Palace Museum, Beijing, the Shanghai Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Palace Museum, Taipei, and the Baur Collection, Geneva. See, also, the example from the Junkunc Collection sold at Christie's New York, 18-19 March 2021, lot 856, as well as one from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation sold at Christie’s New York, 14-15 September 2017, lot 1230.
