Pink porcelain vase with gold trim on an ornate stand, centered against a plain gray studio background.

SACA Observation

Peachbloom is a Kangxi imperial copper-red, produced by blowing the pigment beneath a clear glaze. The resulting surface runs from dusty pink to crushed strawberry, often with moss-green specks. The glaze was reserved for a closed group of scholar’s-desk wares, the ba da ma: four vase types, three water vessels, and a seal-paste box. The laifu zun, or three-string vase (sanxian zun), is one of the four bottles. Three raised rings encircle the base of the neck; the body tapers from high shoulders to a narrow foot. Surviving examples are small; no large vessels are known.

The present vase is 19.5 cm high, with a six-character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue. The mouth rim is bound in Tiffany 18-karat gold and the vase stands on a Tiffany sterling mount—American display fittings of the early twentieth century, not kiln original. It belonged to Kate Sturges Buckingham of Chicago before 1926 and entered the Art Institute of Chicago that year under the name of Lucy Maud Buckingham. It is now released from the museum.

Eight comparable examples can be cited with certainty. Still in public collections: Metropolitan Museum 14.40.377 (Altman Bequest, 1913; 19.7 cm); Walters Art Museum 49.154 and 49.155 (purchased by William T. Walters at the Mary J. Morgan sale, 1886; 19.6 and 20.2 cm); Palace Museum, Beijing, laifu zun 故00147093 (19.9 cm) and laifu ping (19.8 cm). Returned to the market: the Harkness vase from the Metropolitan Museum (20.6 cm; Christie’s New York, 15 September 2016, lot 916); the three-string vase in T. T. Tsui’s Jingguantang set of eight (19.7 cm, rim chip restuck; Christie’s Hong Kong, 3 November 1996, lot 557, the set HK$7,170,000); and the Au Bak Ling vase (20.5 cm; Christie’s Hong Kong, The Au Bak Ling Collection Volume II, lot 926, HK$12,446,000).

In height the Chicago vase stands closest to the Palace Museum pair, the Altman example, and Walters 49.154. Its museum provenance aligns it with the Harkness deaccession. Glaze quality, the condition of the rim beneath the gold band, and the later mounts are the variables that separate it from the Au Bak Ling and Jingguantang prices. A set result cannot be divided to value a single vase.

PROVENANCE

Kate Sturges Buckingham (1858-1937) Collection, Chicago, before 1926.

The Art Institute of Chicago, accessioned as the Collection of Lucy Maud Buckingham (1870-1920) in 1926.

Condition:

-As seen in the catalogue illustration, the top of the mouth has been reduced and replaced with a gold rim with Tiffany stamp-There is a clean break at the base of the neck and some fritting to the glaze on the three raised ‘strings’-One minute tiny burst glaze bubble on the body

This elegant form is sometimes referred to as sanxuan zun, or “three-string vase,” a name derived from the three raised bands encircling the neck, which evoke the strings of Chinese musical instruments. It is also known as laifu zun, or “turnip-shaped vase,” following the Chinese tradition of naming certain porcelain forms after fruits and vegetables.

Similar examples of this form are recorded in important museum and private collections. One in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is illustrated by S. Valenstein in A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1989, no. 231, and again in Sekai Toji Zenshu, Tokyo, 1983, vol. 15, pp. 34-35, fig. 27. An example in the Freer Gallery of Art is illustrated by R. M. Chait, “The Eight Prescribed Peachbloom Shapes Bearing the K’ang Hsi Marks,” Oriental Art, 1957, vol. 3, no. 4, p. 132. Another, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Kangxi Yongzheng Qianlong, Hong Kong, 1989, p. 137, col. pl. 120. A further example was included in the Min Chiu Society exhibition, Monochrome Ceramics, Hong Kong, 1977, no. 10.

The current vase can also be compared to an example formerly in the collection of Mrs. Yale Kneeland, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 7 July 2003, lot 564, and one from the celebrated set of eight peachbloom-glazed vessels in the Jingguantang Collection, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 3 November 1996, lot 557. Another, formerly in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, was sold at Collected in America: Chinese Ceramics from the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Christie's New York, 15 September 2016, lot 916.
