Max N. Berry - A Silver-Backed Parcel-Gilt Bronze 'Animals And Birds' Octofoil Mirror, Tang Dynasty, Sold for US$53760

Ornate flower-shaped metal plaque with green patina and floral relief, centered on a dark studio background.

Q1. What is this mirror? Is it a “lion-and-grapevine” mirror?A. No. This is a silver-backed mirror: a bronze disc with a chased silver sheet applied to the reverse, parcel-gilt. Classic lion-and-grapevine mirrors are cast in high-tin bronze and only look silvery; they do not have a separate silver sheet. Motifs overlap; the technique does not.

Q2. Silver-backed vs pingtuo vs parcel-gilt?A. Silver-backed = a full silver sheet chased and set onto bronze. Pingtuo = gold and silver foil in lacquer, then polished flush. Parcel-gilt = selected motifs fire-gilded on the silver. This lot is silver-backed and parcel-gilt, not pingtuo.

Q3. When were octofoil silver-backed mirrors made?A. Silver or gilt-silver sheets on bronze appear in the Sui and peak on lobed Tang mirrors in the mid-eighth century. The Winthrop example, inscribed under the sheet with a date equivalent to AD 682–683, anchors the type to the Gaozong / Wu Zhou years. Yangzhou is a documented production centre.

Q4. Is the boar-form knob unusual?A. Yes. Tang knobs are usually recumbent lions or mythical beasts. A boar-form loop is less common and is flagged in the catalogue for a reason.

Q5. How rare is a true match?A. Scarce. Fully published, mid-size (10 cm+) silver-backed octofoil mirrors with beasts and birds number only a handful: Eskenazi 1998 no. 17, Winthrop 1969 no. 61, and this piece. The market more often sees 5–6 cm miniatures or circular silver-inset lion-and-grapevine mirrors. Cast silvery bronze examples are not price comparables.

Q6. What auction prices matter?A. The closest anchors are Berry’s own two small silver-backed mirrors sold in 2026 at $19,050 each (est. $4,000–6,000). Ellsworth’s 5.7 cm hexafoil and the Sackler pair show that even miniature silver-backs find dedicated bidding. Zacke’s silver-inset lion-and-grapevine made about €10,400. This 13 cm octofoil sits a tier above the miniatures.

Q7. Where can one see related museum pieces?A. Harvard (Winthrop / Sackler: dated silver-back plus a gold-plaque foliate mirror); Shanghai Museum no. 80; Luoyang excavated nos. 115–116; Graham Collection no. 85; Sen-Oku Hakuko Kan 2006 no. 55. Shōsō-in and Cleveland holdings are mainly pingtuo or mother-of-pearl—adjacent luxury techniques, not the same type.

Q9. What should one check first?A. Whether the silver sheet is original to the bronze; evenness of the ring-punched ground; whether the gilding is original; whether the octofoil outline is cast, not recut; and whether the beasts and foliage sit in the same design family as Winthrop, Shanghai and Ellsworth. An inscription under the sheet, as on the Harvard example, would be decisive; none is recorded on this lot.

Q10. 中文:https://www.christies.com/zh/lot/lot-6598463英文:https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-65984632004 年來源:Sotheby’s New York, 23 March 2004, lot 592。

This piece hails from the distinguished collection of Max N. Berry, with a clear provenance tracing back to its acquisition at Sotheby’s New York on March 23, 2004.

Historically—particularly two to three decades ago—collectors primarily built their collections through private dealers, with only a small fraction of works bought directly at auction. Today, driven by a booming auction industry, this dynamic has shifted significantly, and some collectors now source their acquisitions entirely from the auction block. The true merits and drawbacks of this modern approach will only be fully measured when this current generation of collectors eventually releases their holdings back into the market.

Ultimately, the profound expertise of top-tier advisors and dealers like J.J. Lally and Giuseppe Eskenazi remains virtually unmatched—not only by individual collectors but often by auction house specialists as well. As the adage goes, "Never use your hobby to challenge someone else's profession." It is a blunt but undeniable truth. Appropriately, Max N. Berry’s primary advisor in building his remarkable collection was none other than J.J. Lally.
