史蒂芬・瓊肯三世（Stephen Junkunc, III，1978年逝）舊藏，傳承相當加分。瓊肯購藏中國古代藝術，多經盧芹齋等一流經銷商之手，器物往往另有更早來源。本件於1959年1月6日購自紐約著名古董商、陶瓷專家華倫・E・寇斯（Warren E. Cox，1895–1977）。寇斯在二十世紀中葉古董界極具影響力，1929至1939年間擔任《大英百科全書》藝術總監，所著《陶瓷與瓷器之書》（The Book of Pottery and Porcelain，1944）迄今仍為東方陶瓷鑑定的重要參考。

本品為南宋龍泉窰青釉鬲式爐，釉色梅子青，尺寸中等偏大，達15.6厘米。金繕痕跡從手法判斷，應屬日本早期修繕，或為東渡傳世之作。若對大漆作碳十四檢測，或可進一步推定修復年代。日本所藏中國傳世天目茶碗——無論建窰或茶洋窰——口沿修復並不罕見，部分經檢測，大漆成分可上溯桃山時代。本品造型略欠規整，是其不足；然此類器物終須以上手手感為準。傳世而兼具清晰收藏史者，並不多見。

可參克拉克舊藏同式龍泉窰青釉鬲式爐：一足金繕，2020年7月11日蘇富比香港以677.5萬港元成交。此類爐亦有巨製，口徑逾20厘米者，出光美術館所藏南宋龍泉窰青釉鬲式爐即為一例。仔細觀察，本拍品和克拉克收藏的質量仍有一定差距，恐難以複製奇蹟，但目前估價仍然嚴重偏低，數倍估價成交應是合理。

Condition Report

There is gilt-lacquer repair to a section of the rim, measuring approx. 10 cm wide, with an associated vertical crack running down to the body and extending horizontally to either side. The rim has two further cracks and is warped. One of the vertical flanges also has a section of gilt-lacquer repair, measuring approx. 2 cm long.

Collection of Stephen Junkunc, III (d. 1978). 

The provenance of Stephen Junkunc, III (d. 1978) is itself a material advantage. Junkunc acquired Chinese works of art chiefly through leading dealers such as C. T. Loo, and many of his pieces carry still earlier histories. The present censer was purchased on 6 January 1959 from Warren E. Cox (1895–1977), the well-known New York dealer and ceramic specialist. Cox was a figure of real standing in the trade: he served as Art Director of the Encyclopaedia Britannica from 1929 to 1939, and his The Book of Pottery and Porcelain (1944) remains a standard reference for the connoisseurship of Oriental ceramics.

This is a Southern Song Longquan celadon li-shaped censer in a plum-green (meiziqing) glaze, of medium-to-large size at 15.6 cm. The kintsugi repairs appear, from their technique, to be early Japanese work, consistent with an heirloom piece that had already travelled to Japan. Carbon-14 testing of the lacquer could, in principle, date the restoration more closely. Many Chinese heirloom tenmoku tea bowls in Japan—Jian ware and Chayang ware alike—bear rim repairs; in some cases the lacquer has been dated to the Momoyama period. The form is a little irregular, which must be counted a shortcoming; with vessels of this type, however, the final judgment belongs to the piece in the hand. Surviving examples that combine an intact object with a documented collecting history are not numerous.

Compare a closely related Longquan celadon li-shaped censer from the Alfred Clark collection, one foot restored in kintsugi, which sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on 11 July 2020 for HK$6,775,000. The type also exists in monumental size, exceeding 20 cm; a large heirloom Southern Song Longquan celadon li-shaped censer in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts may be cited.
