SACA Observation
At first glance the animal reads as a rabbit. Sotheby’s catalogues it as a rat-form paperweight. The proportions, the lift of the head and the length of the tail are those of a rat, not a hare.
Rabbits from the Northern Qi into the Tang move from lean to plump, from abbreviated to descriptive. Northern Dynasties examples are long-bodied, ears flat to the back. High Tang rabbits are naturalistic and heavy: white glaze and blue glaze, rounded bodies, long ears, seated or recumbent on a plinth. The tail remains a small triangle against the rump; a trailing tail does not appear. The blue-glazed rabbit in the Tokyo National Museum, the white-glazed rabbit in the Sir Percival David Collection, and the Hata Mineo white rabbit (SACA Auction Notes vol. 43, sold for HK$3.36 million) belong to that series. Read as a rabbit, the tail of the present piece is too long.
The rat is scarce in early Chinese sculpture. It stands first in the zodiac, yet among tomb figures it is far rarer than the horse, the camel or the boar. A rat modelled as an independent ceramic is rarer still. Apart from standing zodiac figures, Tang rats more often inhabit the grape vine: a squirrel or tree shrew holding grapes on the knop of a silver box; a long-tailed rodent in the beasts-and-grapes ground of a bronze mirror. The parcel-gilt silver rat (or mythical-beast) box from Eskenazi sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in recent seasons, and the melon-shaped parcel-gilt silver box with a squirrel at the knop, formerly Walter Hochstadter, shown by Eskenazi in New York in 2011, belong to that line. The ‘auspicious beasts and grapes’ mirrors are the same motif in the plane: sea beasts, lions, birds and vines, with a long-tailed rodent sometimes among them.
