The Tang dynasty white porcelain rabbit is an interesting variety, but of course in terms of sculptural significance it cannot at all replace the fine stone carvings and other important sancai works of the Tang dynasty.

The question of whether the excessive pursuit of domestic trend is aesthetically and internationally sustainable is the golden question worth pondering.

Catalogue Note

A small number of these charming white rabbit figures are known. Compare a closely related rabbit with brown-glazed eyes from the Eumorfopoulos Collection, exhibited at the famous International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1935, cat. no. 989, now preserved in the Percival David Foundation at the British Museum (acc. no. PDF.124); a second from the Meiyintang Collection, illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 3 (II), London, 2006, pl. 1396; a third sold in our New York rooms, 4th December 1985, lot 142, and loaned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the exhibition, Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, 2024, illustrated on the museum website; and another from the James and Marilynn Alsdorf Collection, sold at Christie’s New York 24th September 2020, lot 897.
