Ceramic sculpture of a mythical creature with a fierce expression, blue and orange pattern, and twisted horns. Mounted on a black base.

This Tang Dynasty blue and sancai-glazed pottery Earth Spirit (Zhenmushou), measuring 43.2 cm (17 in.) high including the wood base, was sold at Bonhams for US$48,640 (approximately HK$380,000).

The figure is depicted in a seated pose, with its four hoofed feet firmly planted on a rockwork base. The chest is streaked with vibrant splashes of blue, brown, and cream glazes, while the shoulders feature blue feathered wings. The face conveys a highly animated and fierce expression, with bulging eyes, protruding fangs, large elephantine ears, hair twisted into two diverging points, and a pair of inward-curving horns flanking the head. The application of blue glaze—rare in sancai ware—combined with the tricolor technique creates rich, layered tonal effects. Both the sculptural modeling and the artistic execution demonstrate exceptional refinement and dynamism.

As a tomb guardian figure, the Earth Spirit embodies the distinctive artistic spirit and cultural characteristics of the Tang dynasty. In the 1980s and 1990s, Western collectors were the primary buyers of such early Chinese ceramic sculptures, during which time this category enjoyed strong market enthusiasm. Over the subsequent decades, however, Chinese collectors focused predominantly on Ming and Qing porcelain. During this period, certain prevailing attitudes in the market tended to undervalue earlier excavated works by associating them with notions of “superstition” or “inauspiciousness,” resulting in prolonged price suppression for high-quality archaic ceramics.

Since 2025, the market for archaic (high antiquity) Chinese art has begun a notable resurgence. Younger collectors—particularly those born in the 1990s, 2000s, and even later—have increasingly taken the lead. They place greater emphasis on the intrinsic artistic merit and historical significance of the works themselves, moving away from an exclusive preference for Ming and Qing pieces. Consequently, finely executed Tang sancai tomb guardians of this type are gradually regaining recognition of their proper artistic and market value. At present, they remain in a relatively reasonable valuation range and are expected to continue their steady reappraisal in line with the broader revival of interest in high antiquity ceramics.
