In the colorful lead glazes of Sancai (Three-color ware), blue is the most striking and valuable hue. Imported cobalt materials from Persia (modern-day Iran and Afghanistan) were used as glaze colorants, creating rich and vibrant blue tones. During the Tang Dynasty, the cost of this raw material was often several times that of gold, making blue glaze in Sancai extremely rare and precious, typically reserved for use by royalty and the aristocracy.
