Green ribbed ceramic pot with four stubby legs, set against a light gray background. The pot has a textured, glossy finish.

戶栗美術館2004年6月9日倫敦蘇富比「100 Selected Chinese & Korean Ceramics from the Toguri Collection」專場(拍賣編號 L04212,共100件精選品)。

Literature

Chinese Ceramics in the Toguri Collection, Tokyo, 1988, pl. 29.

The monochrome-glazed series within Tang Sancai are relatively rare varieties. Scholars generally regard green glaze as the earliest color developed among the three-color palette, traceable back to the "dripped glaze" (瓢彩) wares of the Northern Qi dynasty. The lian vessel derives its form from Shang and Zhou bronze prototypes, with the string-patterned lian (弦紋奩) representing a classic subtype among lian forms. In the Han dynasty, three-legged vessels were most commonly decorated with bear-shaped feet; by the Tang dynasty, under Western Regions (Xiyu) influence, these gradually evolved into beast-shaped feet.

The Toguri Museum of Art is an important private museum in Tokyo, founded by Toru Toguri.

The Toguri Museum of Art (戸栗美術館 / Toguri Museum of Art) is a specialized ceramics museum located in Shoto, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo (at 1-11-3 Shoto, on the former site of the Nabeshima domain residence). Established in November 1987 as a public interest incorporated foundation, it is one of the few institutions in Japan dedicated exclusively to East Asian ceramics. Its holdings number approximately 7,000 pieces, with a primary focus on Hizen porcelain such as Imari and Nabeshima wares, alongside substantial collections of Chinese and Korean ceramics. The founder, Toru Toguri (とぐり・とおる / Toru Toguri, 1926–2007, born in Minami-cho, Yamanashi Prefecture), came from a family in civil engineering and construction. After the war, at age 19 he assisted the family business in the timber industry before moving to Tokyo in 1952 to serve as representative of Fuji Construction (a designated contractor for colonized housing projects), where he also supported fellow Yamanashi native and businessman Kenji Kosano. Witnessing the postwar influx of Western (primarily American) culture and the rapid disappearance of traditional Japanese folk artifacts, he resolved to "pass on the beautiful things left by our ancestors to future generations." Starting in the 1960s, he spent over a decade collecting ancient folk implements before shifting—under guidance from antique dealers—to connoisseurship of decorative ceramics. He developed a particular passion for Chinese wares from the Tang through Song to Ming-Qing periods, as well as Korean ceramics, amassing the collection over more than 40 years to establish the museum. Its purpose is "to permanently preserve and publicly exhibit these cultural heritages for transmission to posterity."

On June 9, 2004, the Toguri Museum of Art consigned a special auction through Sotheby's London: "100 Selected Chinese & Korean Ceramics from the Toguri Collection" (sale code L04212, comprising 100 carefully selected lots). The lots were explicitly identified as coming from the Tokyo Toguri Museum of Art's holdings, with many bearing provenance references to the 1988 publication Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Ceramics in the Toguri Museum of Art (《戶栗美術館中國陶瓷名品圖錄》). The selection included renowned Chinese pieces such as Ming-Qing blue-and-white, doucai, wucai, and Longquan celadon, alongside Korean ceramics. Following the sale, these items frequently appear in subsequent Sotheby's and Christie's auctions with provenance notations such as "ex-Toguri Museum of Art collection, Sotheby's London 2004, lot XX" (e.g., examples from the Xuande, Qianlong, and Song Cizhou kiln periods).
