This tripod incense burner (lu), characterized by its raised concentric bowstring pattern (xianwen) and gui-shaped form, draws direct inspiration from Han dynasty bronze vessels. The bowstring motif itself has persisted throughout Chinese history, consistently favored by successive imperial courts. Notably, Emperor Huizong and Emperor Gaozong of the Song dynasty commissioned Ru ware and Southern Song Guan ware censers of the gui tripod form adorned with precisely executed bowstring patterns, highlighting their refined aesthetic preference and adherence to classical antiquarian styles.

This cylindrical container features a straight rim, a flat base, and is elevated upon three animal-form feet. The exterior walls are decorated with evenly spaced raised concentric string patterns encircling the body, terminating just above the animal-shaped feet. These feet are robustly modeled, solidly supporting the vessel body in a posture reminiscent of animals shouldering a ceremonial tripod (ding). The interior and exterior surfaces exhibit distinctly applied glazes of yellow and green respectively: the interior glaze possesses a bright, chicken-fat-like luster, whereas the exterior glaze is a lush, vivid green resembling fresh grass. Both surfaces display a uniformly smooth and lustrous finish, characterized by their intense color and visual depth. The exterior base and the undersides of the feet remain unglazed, revealing a sturdy, well-fired pale beige ceramic body.
This three-footed lian displays a formal regularity of shape combined with clean, graceful lines. In the Tang dynasty, such tripod containers were utilized not only by noblewomen for storing cosmetic and grooming items but were also commonly employed as stationery accessories or incense holders. Embodying both practicality and aesthetic appeal, they provide valuable insight into the unique nuances of daily life and artistic tastes characteristic of this historical period.
