In preparing the catalogue entry, the auction house referenced a comparable piece from the Linyushanren (Masataka Tomita, the so-called “Taxi King of Japan”) collection sold in 2018. Yet, at that time, works of this type from the Cizhou kilns would have struggled to achieve prices at the level we are seeing today. The key reason lies in the shifting buyer demographic: by 2018, the market had already moved from a predominantly Western and Japanese base to one increasingly driven by Chinese collectors—though the latter had not yet fully recognised the significance of Cizhou ware.
It is only this year that Chinese collectors’ awareness of Cizhou’s art-historical importance has meaningfully risen. The rapid surge of interest in wares associated with Julu County has further catalysed a broader re-evaluation of the Cizhou system as a whole. Within this new context, previously underappreciated categories—such as the unadorned white-bodied Cizhou vessels—have quietly come into favour, showing a clear upward trajectory in market reception.
