The piece has an illustrious provenance and has appeared at auction multiple times, yet its price has shown no significant appreciation—failing even to keep pace with inflation. In this sale, a third-party guarantee was introduced, essentially a financial “backstop.” A guarantor agrees to purchase the lot at a pre-set minimum price; if the hammer price exceeds that level, Christie’s must pay the guarantor a commission. This arrangement likely discouraged other bidders, resulting in the lot being knocked down with a single bid.
SALE ROOM NOTICE
This lot is now subject to a guarantee that is fully or partially financed by a third party. The third party will be bidding on the lot and may receive a financing fee from Christie’s if the third party is not the successful buyer.
