Three large Chinese characters carved into a warm brown wooden plaque with visible wood grain.

Who searches deeply what the ancients wrought,

Who trusts and loves the ways of old,

Only then may mind meet mind across the ages,

And befriend the sages long departed.

Our elder brother Yanzhi, whose collection is rich,

From every marvel gathered, the breadth of heart revealed.

Thus a saying of Ji Kang is borrowed,

To name this studio and express his aspiration.

Recorded by Chen Yanwei, in the sixth month of the guiwei year (1943).

Seal script by Deng Erya of Dongguan.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The plaque inscribed with ‘Kangxi Zhai’ (Hall for Disciplined Learning), the studio name of Edward T. Chow (1910–1980), was likely carved by Deng Erya (1884–1954) in Hong Kong in the early 1950s, after a calligraphy by Chen Hanguang (1879–1957, originally named Chen Yanwei) written in 1943. Edward T. Chow kept the plaque hanging in his Geneva home until the end of his life in 1980.
