The inlay technique of gold and silver (錯金銀) represents one of the hallmark achievements of Eastern Zhou craftsmanship and the culmination of its aesthetic refinement. By the late Western Zhou period, the decoration and workmanship of bronze vessels had begun to decline in intricacy, yet during the ensuing Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, metal artistry experienced a profound transformation. The bold and commanding forms of earlier Shang and Zhou prototypes were reinterpreted with unprecedented sophistication and opulence in detail.
This era embodies a striking duality—monumental in scale yet delicate in execution—a perfect encapsulation of its aesthetic spirit. Within the intellectual milieu shared by thinkers such as Confucius, Zhuangzi, and Mozi, the art of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods reveals a sensibility that is at once mystical, introspective, and deeply engaging, inviting continued exploration into the philosophical depth that shaped its material beauty.

Albert (1927–2018) and Leonie van Daalen-Roell (1930–2018) came from distinguished Dutch families with long traditions of collecting. Over the course of several decades, they assembled a wide-ranging collection that encompassed Chinese ceramics and works of art, Old Master paintings, Dutch Delft, silver, and furniture. Their acquisitions were made through leading international auction houses as well as prominent dealers in London and across Europe. Their particular passion for Chinese art was sparked by an armorial plate bearing the Sichterman coat of arms, inherited by Albert van Daalen-Roell. He traced his lineage to Jan Albert Sichterman (1692–1764), the celebrated Dutch East India Company (VOC) governor of Bengal, who spent 27 years in Asia and returned to the Netherlands with considerable wealth and an impressive collection of Chinese works of art.Compare with a related silver-inlaid bronze ring, Eastern Zhou dynasty, 3rd century BC, illustrated by J.Rawson and E.Bunker, Ancient Chinese and Ordos Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1990, pp.136-137, no.42, where the author notes that they may have been used as handles to embellish lacquer vessels.See a related gold and silver inlaid bronze disc, late Warring States period/Western Han dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 18 March 2025, lot 142.
