Tri-coloured (sancai) pottery figures of dogs from the Tang dynasty are exceedingly rare. The Okada Museum of Art holds a notable example, formerly in the Uragami Sokyudo collection, which is of larger size. It remains uncertain whether this piece will appear in the Sotheby’s Okada Museum sale scheduled for 21 November 2025. Should it do so, its presence would likely have a significant impact on the market perception and valuation of the present amber-glazed Tang sancai hound.

本拍品經牛津熱釋光檢測,編號C123m9(2023年9月14日),結果與其斷代相符

Hounds of this type, valued for their keen eyesight and speed, have enjoyed enduring popularity in China since early times. Known as xigou (literally 'slender dogs'), they appear not only in ceramic form, as in the present example, but also in the murals of Imperial Tang tombs. For a comparable figure excavated from a tomb in Luoyang, Henan, see Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan, (Complete Collection of Chinese Culture), Hong Kong, 1995, p.160, no.547; and for another example, see Illustrated Catalogues of Tokyo National Museum, Chinese Ceramics 1, Tokyo, 1988, p.56, no.214. Compare also with a white and green-glazed hound, 7th/8th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc.no.29.18).
