Green-Glazed White-Slip Black-Sgraffito Jar with Animal Motifs

formerly in the Clark Collection

Although modest in scale, this jar represents a rare surviving example from the late Northern Song period, 12th century. The vessel was first coated with a white slip, then covered with an iron pigment wash, producing a two-layered ground of black and white. The decorative motifs were achieved by scraping away areas of the black surface to reveal the white beneath, a technique known as white-ground black-sgraffito. The jar was then thinly covered with a transparent glaze and fired, followed by a second, low-temperature firing after applying a green glaze.

Examples of green-glazed white-ground black-sgraffito ware are exceptionally rare, with only a few vases previously recorded. This jar is thus of particular significance. The decoration is arranged within three medallion-like panels, depicting a bird preying on an insect, a rabbit, and a dog, all rendered with brushwork evocative of Song–Yuan painting styles. The piece is believed to have been produced at the Cizhou kilns in southern Hebei. It was formerly in the collection of Mrs. Clark in the United States and was already celebrated internationally during her ownership.
