This Ding ware white-glazed box with its refined xin guan (新官, “new official”) inscription features an understated carved floral design and an exquisitely proportioned form reminiscent of a flower bud about to bloom. The object radiates a timeless aesthetic power that transcends the confines of its era.

White-glazed Ding ware was a favored choice of the Northern Song court. The depiction of elegant tableware in Emperor Huizong’s Elegant Gathering painting suggests that Ding ware may have been used in imperial banquets. This is further supported by numerous excavated Ding pieces from Southern Song palace sites, bearing inscriptions such as “Palace,” “Empress,” and “Imperial Consort,” which attest to the ware’s close association with courtly use.

Compared to pieces inscribed simply with guan (官, “official”), those bearing the xin guan mark are even rarer. A comparable example with a guan inscription is preserved in the Shanghai Museum.
