For more than a century after the rediscovery of Tang sancai, the field has been sustained largely by collectors and scholars in Europe, North America, and Japan. In recent years both market interest and scholarly attention have revived, with prices finding more sustainable levels and a growing number of Chinese collectors engaging systematically with the material. As museums become more widely accessible, recognition of Tang sancai as a pinnacle of Tang cosmopolitan aesthetics has risen rapidly.

This covered box in the Tokyo National Museum (三彩花弁文合子, TG-2422) is of a relatively uncommon form. The lid is low and flattened, with a central knob, and the vessel is cylindrical and comfortably handheld. Such flattened-knob covers appear more frequently after the High Tang, in the middle and later eighth century. The body displays the characteristic wax-resist technique, leaving a regular pattern of white dots against flowing amber and green glazes that are evenly fired and of high quality. The lid is ornamented with an eight-petalled floral motif centered on the knob, combining green and amber glazes in a design that fuses Western Regions floral conventions with Tang court taste.

In shape the box can be compared with contemporary reliquaries (śarīra cases) and incense containers in metal or other materials. It may have served as a burial object, a practical container, or a ritual vessel. Hirota Matsushige (Fukosai), founder of the Kochukyo firm, later adapted it as a tea caddy, adding stainless-steel linings to the interior—an instance of the Japanese tea tradition reinterpreting Tang forms and surfaces.
