Brown glazed boar figurine with a chipped white base on a gray background, shown in profile with a worn, aged look

Richard E. Fuller(1897–1976)共同建立。

This piece belongs to the Eugene Fuller Memorial Collection. Named in honor of the distinguished urologist Dr. Eugene Fuller (1858–1930), the collection was in fact formed by his wife Margaret MacTavish Fuller and their son Dr. Richard E. Fuller (1897–1976). Richard Fuller served as founding director of the Seattle Art Museum for forty years (1933–1973). Using the family’s resources, he systematically acquired and donated large numbers of Asian works of art, establishing the foundation of the museum’s holdings in Chinese ceramics, jades, and sculpture. This boar is one of the early acquisitions of 1933 (accession no. 33.37).

Tang sancai figures of wild boars are inherently rare. In terms of size, known examples can be broadly classified into three categories:

The first comprises miniature examples measuring approximately 5 cm in length (the Seattle Art Museum piece belongs to this size category); the second consists of small examples measuring around 10 cm in length (an example may be seen in the online exhibition of Kōzan Ryūsendō, formerly in the collection of Wilfrid Fleisher, 1897–1976); the third comprises large examples exceeding 20 cm in length. Comparable large-scale pieces are held by the Tokyo National Museum, Eskenazi, and Uragami Sōkyūdō.
