本件灰被天目茶碗，銘曰「玉潤」，為一件流傳至今之中國天目茶碗，風格含蓄而內斂，尤為桃山時期侘茶流行之際所推崇。其造型略呈收口，見込（內底）開展平坦，與福建建窯之天目茶碗略似，但高台外壁平削，有別於典型建盞風格，這類作品後來被認定為茶洋窯的作品。
所謂「灰被」，乃指釉層經重複施釉後呈現之微渾質感，釉色不若黑釉深沉耀眼，卻更顯雅逸之趣，極合「侘」之美學標準，體現出茶人對質樸枯淡之境界的追求。
高台內部以朱漆書「玉潤」二字，傳為千利休親筆所題。雖無實證可資確認，然或與相國寺內之「玉潤軒」相關聯，暗示此器可能源出寺院，具有宗教或修禪背景。
本碗推定製於元末明初（14至15世紀），為中國陶瓷傳入日本後，被茶人珍視、名付並賦予精神性意涵之典型例證。現藏於德川美術館，為其館藏茶道具中之重器之一。

This haikatsuki tenmoku (灰被天目) tea bowl—bearing the inscription Gyokujun (玉潤, “Jade Gloss”)—is a refined example of Chinese ceramic artistry that gained particular reverence in Japan during the Momoyama period. The bowl exhibits a form reminiscent of Jian ware (tenmoku), with slightly inward-curving walls and a broad, flat interior. The footring is distinctly trimmed in a horizontal manner, characteristic of wares adapted for the Japanese tea ceremony.
The term haikatsuki (灰被, “ash-covered”) refers to the soft, slightly turbid quality of the glaze, resulting from a deliberate double application of glaze. This creates a subdued, contemplative surface—resonating with the wabi aesthetic that defined the era’s tea practices.
Inside the foot, the name Gyokujun is inscribed in red lacquer, traditionally attributed to Sen no Rikyū himself. While the attribution remains unverified, the name may have derived from the Gyokujunken (玉潤軒), a sub-temple within the Shōkoku-ji monastery complex, suggesting a monastic provenance or spiritual association.
This piece is classified as Chinese ceramic ware from the late Yuan to early Ming period (14th–15th century), preserved in the Tokugawa Art Museum as part of its treasured chadōgu (tea utensil) collection.

灰被天目 銘 玉潤
はいかつぎてんもく めい ぎょくじゅん
灰被天目は、ややすぼまった形状は建盞に近いものの、見込は平坦に広く、高台脇が水平に削られ、釉薬を二重掛けすることでいくぶん濁ったような釉調となることが特徴です。侘び茶が流行した桃山時代頃にはかなり重んじられていました。 高台内に朱漆で「玉潤」とあり、千利休筆と伝称されていますが、相国寺内にあったという「玉潤軒」との関連が推測されています。
