A dark bowl with a white rim rests on a decorative stand with floral patterns, placed on a matching plate against a neutral background.

Northern oil-spot Tenmoku tea bowls from the Song dynasty have long remained an underappreciated category within Chinese ceramic scholarship. The present example is notable for its unusually large size and commanding presence. A comparable bowl is preserved in the Ryūkō-in sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, a celebrated heirloom piece that was once exhibited alongside the famed Yōhen Tenmoku at the Miho Museum.

A black pottery bowl with white speckles and a white rim sits on a plain gray background, showing cracks repaired with gold.

Oil-Spot 'White-Rim' Tenmoku Bowl with Mother-of-Pearl Stand

Henan, Northern Song to Jin Dynasty

Height: 8.4 cm

Mouth diameter: 14.5 cm

Foot diameter: 4.7 cm

This Tenmoku bowl, likely produced at a kiln of the Cizhou-type system in Henan province, exemplifies a distinctive form characterized by a white-glazed rim that creates the visual effect of a metallic mount (fukurin 覆輪). Among such wares, two major forms are commonly noted: one with a curved, bowl-like profile as seen here, and another with straight sides flaring from foot to mouth. The bowl features iridescent oil-spot crystallization, an accidental yet prized effect of kiln transformation (yaohen 窯變) during firing. It is paired with a Tenmoku stand inlaid with mother-of-pearl (raden 螺鈿), highlighting its function as a refined object of tea practice and courtly aesthetic appreciation.
