This chaire (tea caddy) dates from the 16th century Muromachi period and is classified as a karamono (Chinese-origin) ware. It bears the name Hitachi-obi ("Hitachi Belt"), a term that alludes to the ceremonial sash used during the Kashima Shrine festival in Hitachi Province (modern-day Ibaraki Prefecture). The appellation refers to the characteristic dual stream of glaze—referred to as ren-nadare (連なだれ)—resembling the trailing folds of a traditional sash.

This vessel, likely of the ko-katatsuki (small-shouldered) type, features a flared mouth, short neck, and a gracefully rounded shoulder. Twin glaze runs cascade down its waist, marking it as a distinguished example within the karamono category. Similar forms are recorded among the official utensils of the Mito Domain, and such pieces have long been esteemed by generations of tea practitioners.
