Kachū Katatsuki

A Renowned Masterpiece of the Restoration Era

A Ko-Seto (Old Seto) katatsuki (shouldered) tea caddy. The tea caddy was initially named Yamabuki ("sick leaf") due to the toki (鸠斑) speckled patterns on its surface, resembling diseased leaves in summer groves. However, Kobori Enshū found the name Yamabuki unrefined. Drawing inspiration from a poem in the Kokin Wakashū by Ariwara no Yukihira:

(If someone asks of my whereabouts, tell them:I am lamenting amidst the brine-drenched shores of Suma.)

He replaced the term Yamabuki with the more elegant and poetic Kachū.

This tea caddy, along with Zaichūan, Aisaka, Hatakeyama, Iyosu, Tsuribune, and Kyūkō, is regarded as one of the "Seven Seto Masterpieces." Originally owned by Kobori Enshū, it later became part of the Fujita family collection.

The caddy is documented in Enshū Shūi, Kokon Meibutsu Ruijū, and Sadō Meibutsu Kō.
