青銅筆記 vol.37 西周晚期大师虘簋，1940年陝西省扶風縣法門寺任村出土 - Taishicuo Gui, Late Western Zhou Dynasty

「太師虘簋」為西周晚期青銅重器，1940年出土於陝西省扶風縣法門寺任家村窖藏，同出共四件，目前分別收藏於北京故宮博物院、上海博物館、中國文字博物館。

簋為古代盛食禮器，本器形制端莊，矮體鼓腹，圈足較高，頸部兩側飾以風格獨特的獸首耳（鋬）。器表飾有簡潔有力的直線紋，頸部與圈足各飾一道粗弦紋。簋蓋內壁與器底鑄有對銘，共7行70字，字體規整，銘文內容記述周王冊命賞賜之事，為研究西周禮制、官制及紀年曆法的重要史料。

The Taishi Cuo Gui is an important bronze vessel from the late Western Zhou dynasty. It was excavated in 1940 from a hoard at Renjia Village, Famen Temple, Fufeng County, Shaanxi Province, as part of a set of four identical pieces. These are now dispersed among institutions such as the Palace Museum in Beijing and various private collections.

The gui is a ritual vessel used in antiquity for holding food offerings. This example features a dignified, compact form with a swelling belly, a high ring foot, and a pair of distinctive animal-head handles (pan) on the neck. The surface is decorated with bold vertical ribbing, complemented by a single prominent bow-string pattern on the neck and foot. Both the interior of the lid and the bottom of the vessel bear identical inscriptions (a “paired inscription”) of 70 characters arranged in seven lines. The text records a royal audience, appointment, and bestowal of honors, making it a significant primary source for the study of Western Zhou ritual practices, official hierarchy, and calendrical systems.

正月既望甲午，王在周師量宫。旦，王各（格）大（太）室，即立（位）。王乎（呼）师农召太师虘入门，立中廷。王乎（呼）宰曶赐太师虘虎裘。虘拜稽首。敢对扬天子丕显休，用作宝簋。虘其万年永宝用。隹（唯）十又二年。

In the first month, after the full moon, on the day jiawu, the King was in the Zhou Shi Liang Palace. At dawn, the King entered the Grand Hall (taishi), and took his position. The King called upon Shi Chen to summon Grand Tutor Cuo (Taishi Cuo) to enter through the gate and stand in the center of the courtyard. The King called upon the Steward Hu (Zai Hu) to bestow upon Grand Tutor Cuo a tiger-skin robe. Cuo bowed and prostrated himself, touching his head to the ground.

Daring to respond to and extol the Son of Heaven’s great and illustrious favor, [I] have had this precious gui vessel made. May Cuo for ten thousand years eternally treasure and use it. It was the twelfth year.
