Catalogue Note

Longquan wares with moulded and applied decoration first appeared in the late Song dynasty but became popular and were produced in larger quantities during the Yuan dynasty. The present jar, originally used as a Mizusachi (water-container for tea ceremonies) is of barrel shape and among the rarest of Longquan celadon forms. The peony decoration is exquisite. A larger example of this form and its original cover, similarly decorated with peonies, is in the Seikado Bunko Art Museum, illustrated by Hasebe Gakuji, ed., Sekai toji zenshu / Ceramic Art of the World, vol. 12: So / Sung Dynasty, Tokyo, 1977, pls 85-6.

Compare also an example decorated with flowerheads from the Percival David Collection, now in the British Museum, London, illustrated in R. L. Hobson, A Catalogue of Chinese Pottery and Porcelain in the Collection of Sir Percival David, London, 1934, pl. LII; and a closely related example of the same form and size, similarly decorated with peony scroll, from the collection of Yasuda Yukihiko (d. 1978), sold in Christie's New York, 13th September 2019, lot 1047, and included in Chinese Ceramics, Lacquer and Gold from the 12th to the 14th Century, Eskenazi, London, 2023, cat. no. 18.
