參考一件來自繭山龍泉堂線上畫廊的萬曆龍紋大缸，售價為1600萬日圓，來源傳來自張宗憲。本次芝加哥藝術博物館的明萬曆青花魚藻紋大缸傳承更為顯赫，但母題是魚而不是龍，另外有一些品相的小問題：
此鱼缸曾对半断裂，外壁以锔钉修复，口沿另有一块三角形碎片重新粘合，断裂处有数处填补的磕缺及轻微缺失；整体可见预期的使用磨损，尤以内壁为甚，圈足有数处预期的小磕；另有数处烧制过程中产生的轻微不规则处，此为本类作品及年代所常见。

明朝後半期、萬暦年間（1572～1620年）に宮中で使用された大甕です。水を張り、魚を放ち、水蓮などを愛でたかもしれません。本作が制作された萬暦年間は王朝末期の退廃と停滞の時代でありましたが、陶磁器を通して観ると大型の器形や多種多様な造形の作品が生み出された時代であり、明代陶磁の集大成ともいえる時代です。
本作の魅力はなんといっても、鱗の一枚にいたるまで精緻に描かれた珠を追う飛龍の迫力であり、非常に濃厚な発色の青花は西アジアよりもたらされた「回青」と呼ばれる良質なコバルト顔料によるもので、文様に更なる力強さを加えています。そしてその主題を支える、特大かつほとんど歪みのない器体から往時の官窯の技術力が感じられます。こういった充実した作品の様相は嘉靖や隆慶の気風を継承する萬暦でも前期の作とみなされ、明朝最後の輝き張居正（1525～1582年）政権期在りし日々の威風堂々たる風格を感じていただけるでしょう。
旧蔵者とされるRobert Chang（1927～2024年）は、香港で活躍した著名なコレクター兼ディーラーでありました。2006年の氏の売立では、清朝官窯が当時の史上最高額で落札される作品が含まれるなど、多数の優品を所蔵していました。本作に関しては氏旧蔵という確証こそありませんが、そのような人物の好みに適う優品といえるでしょう。

The fishbowl was broken in half and repaired with staples on the exterior, with an additional triangular section at mouth restuck, and a few filled chips and minor loss along the breaks. Expected wear overall particularly to the interior, and a few expected nicks to foot rim. A few minor irregularities overall from firing typical for works of this type and age

The fine quality and decoration of this exceptional fish bowl closely relate it to the celebrated mid-fourteenth-century jars decorated with comparable compositions of fish swimming among aquatic plants. It can also be compared to a Yuan-dynasty prototype in the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, illustrated in Masterpieces of Oriental Ceramics, Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, 1994, p. 54, no. 29, and with another Yuan-period ‘fish’ jar sold at Christie’s London, 11 July 2006, lot 111. A further related example dating to the Wanli period, painted with a similarly elegant design of fish and waterweeds, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 1291.
The motif of fish swimming in water naturally lent itself to the rebus Yushui hexie, “May you be as harmonious as fish and water.” Such imagery was particularly auspicious in the context of marriage, where the depiction of a pair of fish further conveyed wishes for fertility and conjugal happiness. The enduring popularity of fish as a decorative motif, especially during later dynasties, also stems from the fact that the word for fish, yu, is a homophone for “abundance” or “surplus,” also pronounced yu. Accordingly, two fish symbolize doubled abundance, while a goldfish, jinyu, suggests an abundance of gold
