拍賣筆記 vol.453 蘇富比紐約2026:隋代白釉蓋罐 - Sotheby’s New York 2026, A ‘Jizhou' 'Papercut' Bowl, Junkunc Collection, Southern Song Dynasty

Targeting a single category, inflating prices through concerted promotion, manufacturing market consensus, and then distributing the material globally—at times even fabricating provenance—is the reputational pressure now facing Sui white porcelain. It is also a structural problem in the market for ancient Chinese art more generally. How to re-anchor prices in historical value that can be verified, rather than spending the next rise in advance through narrative, remains a question worth examining.
What needs to be pursued is research into the objects themselves: whether provenance can be cross-checked, whether the surviving corpus can be estimated with any reliability, and whether aesthetic judgment can stand apart from mutual reinforcement within closed circles. Prolonged hard selling tends not to lock in consensus; it erodes trust. In recent years a jar of this type has appeared at auction almost every season. How many actually survive, and how secure their chains of ownership are, still lack publicly testable data. Whether a work of art is, in the end, a means of understanding history and training the eye—or an instrument of finance—is a distinction the market continues to answer in different ways, and one that still requires watching.
